Beauty Unboxing: Birchbox September 2015 – Birthday Box

This month Birchbox* is celebrating their 5th birthday, so this month’s box is extra special. All the products featured in the box have come from their “birth place” – USA!

There was a choice of two box designs, which were both created by two subscribers. I chose this design as it was more my taste. I also like to reuse my boxes for makeup and skincare storage, so a pretty box is a must!

On opening the box, this is what I first saw.
The first thing that caught my attention was this lovely blue hair brush designed to detangle hair more easily (Birchbox‘s own Tangle Teaser) and I was super excited to try this out!

I’ve been wanting my own Tangle Teaser for a while now as I’ve heard so many good things about them, I just didn’t want to spend all that money on a hair brush. As I have quite thick and curly hair, I need to have a brush that will get through allof my hair and do it quickly, so if I’m not sure it will do it, I will not buy it.

Luckly, this came in my box, and I think it’s safe to say that I love it! It is quite small, and is designed for travel and throwing into your handbag. However, the size is not a problem at all and gets through my long, curly hair in no time! Perfect!
The next thing I spotted was this Cheeky Lip lip pen by Laqa & Co.

It’s in a beautiful bright coral colour – not something I’d wear at this time of the year, but a good colour to experiment with nonetheless. Apparently it can be used on the cheeks as well.
It applies very matte, and despite the tone, has a very seamless looking application too. The formula seems very creamy, as well as quite long lasting and left a stain on my wrist where I swatched it for hours (despite my efforts to wash it off!)
Now this next product was something I was ecstatic to find in my box, as it’s a brand I’ve been wanting to try for a long time, but never could justify paying the price for a product I may not like. And that is Laura Mercier
This is the Flawless Skin Face Polish, and after using it, I must stay, it’s a bloody good exfoliator! You can actually tell it’s working, just isn’t too harsh on the skin. It left my skin feeling soft and rid of my horrible dry patches. I don’t however, like it as much as my microdermabrasion from Body Shop though!
The John Masters Organic Citrus and Neroli Detangler was a great addition to the box – I have super curly hair, so this is a great thing for me to try out.
I woke up the next day with super curly hair – it looked like I’d had a perm! Once I brushed it though, it was back to it’s curly, frizzy self, but it felt really soft, and was a lot shiner than usual. There wasn’t really much of a scent to it though, which is a big must in my hair products.
The Beauty Protector Beauty Wash was a disappointment to the box this month. I found that this sample size was quite small – too small to even take away with you on holiday. I does smell quite nice though, but a pretty pointless sample as it has maybe one use inside!
The last product is something everyone gets in their box this month, and that is Benefit‘s the POREfessional: license to blot*. This is something that I’ve seen quite a lot of, but never felt the need to look into, as my skin is more dry than oil, and therefore isn’t targeted at me.
I did see, however, that it reduces the appearance of pores, and I’m all up for that! So I tried it underneath my foundation but on top of my primer, and I found that it did slightly make my skin look (and feel) smoother. I wouldn’t jump out to buy it though, as I really do not need to blot my makeup.
Overall, I wasn’t really stunned by this month’s box, there were good brands in there, as well as products I would use and like to buy, but it wasn’t anything special, which is what I was expecting from this month’s box! Maybe my hopes were just too high.
